Johann Wilhelm Nißler was born to Johann Adam (Nüßler) Nissler (bef.1797-bef.1849) and Christiane Wilhelmine (Dinkelacker) Nißler (1811-bef.1859) in Bleichmühle, Sindelfingen on May 7, 1847. He was baptised on May 9 in Sindelfingen.[1][2] Johann Wilhelm was the fifth child of six of his mother and the twelfth child of thirteen children of his father, as his mother was the third wife of his father. Johann Wilhelm's father died when he was two, a few months prior to the birth of Johann Wilhelm's younger brother.[3] When Johann Wilhelm was just eleven years old his mother died as well.[4]
In 1867 Johann Wilhelm moved to England.[5] He likely was part of the exodus of Germans butchers to England from Württemberg when England was experiencing a growth in the popularity of pork. Possibly he trained as a butcher before leaving Germany to meet the demand in England.[6] His older brother Johann Adam also emigrated to England. It is unknown if they migrated together or if one of them went ahead of the other. However on October 27, 1875 Johann Wilhelm, now using the Anglicized name of John William, joined the St. Hugh Lodge of the Free Masons in Lincoln, England. His occupation was listed as pork butcher. His certificate was completed July 26, 1876. His brother "John Adam," butcher, joined on April 20, 1876 and was granted his certificate on July 26 also. John William continued contributing to the Free Masons each year beginning in 1875 and ending in 1880, whereas his brother continued until 1883.[7]
Although John William was certainly part of the Free Masons in Lincoln during these years, he obviously travelled to Copenhagen, Denmark. July 11, 1877 his daughter Vita Eddy Antonette Pedersen was born in Frederiksberg, Copenhagen to unwed mother Hansine Dorthea Elisabeth Pedersen. The christening record for Vita noted that ten months before her birth her mother had been living at 44 Absalongade, 2nd Floor, so her child support would be the responsibility of Skt. Matthæus Sogn, and that "Johan William", the father, was from Lincoln, England. [8][9]
John William seems to have moved to Copenhagen where he was working as a delivery man. Perhaps he moved in 1880 or 1881 when he stopped paying the dues for membership in the Free Masons in England.[7]
In 1885 he was in a relationship with Karen Marie Christensen (1859-aft.1901) in Sankt Matthæus Sogn. Their child was born February 19, 1886 in Frederiksberg Sogn, Copenhagen and christened on May 9 of that year in Sankt Matthæus Sogn. The midwife was JFr. Petersen at Danmarksgade 5.[10] Sadly the baby died at the age of three months.[11]
By the fall of 1886 John William was in another relationship with Henriette Ditlevmine Meilstrup. Their son Frederik William (Nissler) Hansen was born July 15, 1887 in Frederiksberg Sogn in Copenhagen and the birth was attended by the same midwife Fru. Petersen of the same address Danmarksgade 5. Frederik William was christened in Frederiksberg Kirke. Child support was to be arranged through Helligånds Sogn as his mother had been living there 10 months before his birth.[12]
In February, 1890 John William (42) was working as a delivery man for the Christgaard household at Kjöbmager 26, Copenhagen. He was the household member who signed the census form attesting to its accuracy, despite noting his birth location as Lincoln, England.[13]
His relationship with Karen Marie Christensen was either still continuing or had renewed, as they had a second daughter born to them August 31, 1890.[14] Baby Olga died October 8, 1890.[15]
In the following year John William was visiting his brother John Adam in Lincoln when the census for England was taken.[16]
On May 1, 1892 John William registered his move from the 4th floor at 26 Kjöbmager to the second floor. He was still working as a delivery man at the time.[17]
John William, delivery man, died at his home on April 13, 1897 at the age of 49. He was buried in the Fasan Kirchhof, also known as Frederiksberg Assistens Kirkegård, on April 19 as a member of the Sankt Petri Tyske (German) Kirke.[18]
John William's partner Karen Marie Christensen gave birth to another daughter, Dagmar Mary Ingeborg (Christensen) Zimmermann (1888-aft.1930), in 1888. This child's baptism record does not name any father. Could John William have been the father for this child as well? She lived to adulthood and had children so there may be living family to test for DNA matches.
