Elizabeth Nixon RRC was born in 1865 in Mean Meer, Bengal, India.
Making her way to New South Wales (Australia), she trained and became a nurse.
Elizabeth was commissioned as a Nursing Sister in the New South Wales Army Nursing Service Reserve for the Second Boer War in South Africa. She sailed on the Moravian with the Second contingent of the New South Wales Army Medical Corps on 17th January 1900. [1] She was Mentioned in Despatches (equivalent to today's Commendation for Gallantry), London Gazette, 10th September 1901, page 5967, position 14 [2] and, on 27th September 1901, page 6324, position 1, she was awarded the Royal Red Cross (RRC) for 'outstanding work with the wounded and those who succumbed to tropical diseases'. [3] Elizabeth was presented the medal by King Edward VII at St James' Palace, London, on 12th March 1902. She was also awarded the Queen's South Africa Medal for her war service.
Elizabeth is recorded in the 1911 UK census as working at the Sanatorium in Chingford, Essex, England. [4] Most biographers believe she is the Elizabeth C Nixon whose death, aged 64 years, is recorded in the June quarter 1929 at Mutford, Suffolk, England. [5]
