{Testament of Patrick Nisbit, 4 March 1622 written in margin} The testament testamentar and inventory of the deceased Patrick Nisbit younger in Dumbar who died on the 6 April 1621, made and given up by himself as concerns the nomination of his executor and legacies and part of the inventory of his goods, gear and debts and partly by his relict, Margaret Home whom he had nominated as his only executor in his Letter will which he had signed in presence of witnesses

Inventory He had:

  • 6 bolls of malt at £4 the boll = £24
  • 8 bolls of barley at 5 merks the boll = 40 merks
  • 16 daills = £4/16/-
  • 16 elns of linen cloth at 10/- the eln = £8
  • 1 ½ last of trees = £9
  • 3 puncheons = 30/-
  • The contents of the house with his clothing valued at £57
  • 200 strings at 40/- the 100 = £4
  • 500 graths at £4 the 100 = £5

Total = £139/19/4d

Debts owed to the deceased by:

  • Jasper Home and John Wait portioners of Eistbarns = 200 merks
  • Patrick Home of Brumehous and his cautoners = 1,000 merks
  • Mr James Home at Dumbar = 50 merks
  • Robert Nisbit in Dumbar = £10
  • George Home there = £9
  • Gavin Young and John Nisbit in Lochend or either of them = 100 merks

Legacy and Letterwill At Dumbar, 1 April 1621, Patrick Nisbit younger in Dumbar being sick in body but whole in mind and perfect memory finding there is nothing more certain than death and nothing more uncertain as to the hour, leaves his soul to God and his body to be buried Firstly he nominates Margaret Home, his spouse to be his only executor and intromitter with his goods and gear, except for the following legacies He leaves:

  • All his clothes to James Nisbit, his only son, whom failing his decease to his brother, William Nisbit
  • The 200 merks owing to him by Jasper Home and John Wait was to go to John and William Achhesons his sister’s sons ‘to help them to a craft’. The money is to be uplifted by his father, Patrick Nisbit at the following Whitsunday
  • To his sister Ewphame Nisbit, he leaves the 1000 merks owed to him by Patrick Home of Brumehouse, reserving the interest on it to his father during his lifetime and then was to go his wife, Margaret Home after that
  • £20 to the poor of Dumbar plus 10 merks to be given them at his burial, as well as 6 bolls of malt and 6 bolls of barley

He was owed the following debts:

  • 20 merks by Mr James Home, minister of Dumbar
  • £10 by Robert Nisbit there
  • £9 by George Home there
  • 100 merks by Gavin Young and John Nisbit in Lochens

He nominates Patrick Nisbit elder, his father to be the only tutor to his son, James Nisbit This was written by Alexander Hog, notary public and signed by Patrick Nisbit in presence of William Kellie younger burgess of Dumbar; John Kellie merchant burgess there; William Lauder burgess there; John Corsbie burgess there and the said Alexander Hog Margaret Home was confirmed as executor by Mr John Arthur etc Andrew Home portioner of Simprene became cautioner for her [2]
