Francis Ormond Nielsen was born in 1891 in Preston, Victoria, Australia, son of Harriett Ann (Brown) Nielsen and Rasmus Nielsen.[1]
On 15 July 1915 Francis, unmarried Salesman aged 24, enlisted as a Private with the Australian Army, 14th Battalion, 10th Reinforcements, Regimental Number 3098. Unit embarked from Melbourne, Victoria, on board HMAT A17 Port Lincoln on 16 October 1915. He was transferred to the 46th Battalion in March 1916. He was promoted in the field to Sergeant in August 1916. He was wounded in action in France in April 1918. [2]
He was awarded the Distinguished Conduct Medal. [3]
On 1 July 1940 Francis enlisted Australian Army, Service Number V4130. He served as a Warrant Officer Class 2 with the 8th Australian Ordnance Stores Company and was discharged on 13 November 1944. [4]
Francis died in 1970. aged 78 in Heidelberg, Victoria [5] and was interred at the Footscray General Cemetery. Church of England E, Grave 322. [6] [7]
