Katherine Nicolai Penner was born at Rossdorf, Hessen Germany, March 2, 1862. She came to the United with her parents, two brothers and two sisters when she was 4 years old in 1866. The family sailed from Bremen, Germany via Southampton, England to New York on the maiden voyage of the Steamship S S Deutschland 1866, Oct. 14, 1866 and arrived in New York, Oct. 29, 1866. The family most likely processed through Castle Gardens at the southern tip of Manhattan Island, New York and then traveled to Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania Nov. 1866. The Nicolai Family are listed as passengers in the Steerage and Second Class on the ship.

In 1878 Katherine moved with her family from Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania to Sutton, Nebraska where she received catechetical instruction and was confirmed in the German Lutheran Church. She married Jacob K Penner on Oct. 28, 1882 and their first home was near Hampton. Later then moved to Trenton and finally to Henderson, Nebraska where they owned their home. Katherine and her husband were the parents of 12 children. She passed away at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Anna Sophia Risden, Aurora, Nebraska, Feb 26, 1938.
