My great-grandfather is a complete brick wall for me! From his 1918 WWI draft registration, I got that his birth date is October 6, 1876 & he claims to have been born in the US. I have conflicting information - the 1910 US Census shows him living with Pauline Nicolai & their 2 young boys and that he was born in Germany, came to the US in 1882 & was not a naturalized citizen. The birth certificate for his son, Edwin, says that Frank was born in New York. In 1937, a Frank Frederick Nickel was naturalized on November 12 in the US District Court at Los Angeles. Ordinarily, I would not necessarily have connected these two names, but the signatures on both documents are strikingly similar.
