The following is part of an E-mail (1-22-1999) from Deborah Gaudier [dgaudier@london.ssa.slb.com]
William Porter Massengill, b. 20 Mar 1819, Washington Co TN (He was b. at the old Massengill place on the Watauga River. Can't recall off the top of my head if by this is meant the old brick house still owned by Massengills across from Rocky Mount State Historic Site, or another house). d. 7 Mar
1875 Union City, TN. The following is from a letter written by his daughter Martha Otilla Daniel on 24 Feb 1915 which appears pp.229-30 of the Massengill book:
"Yes, my father was a physician--William Porter Massengill...The second or middle name of three of his children was "Porter", Susan P., Wm. P., Alex. P. My father was a surgeon in the Confederate service, consequently, had to refugee after the close of the war. He removed to Union City and died
there 7 Mar 1877 [note diff. date]. Wm. G., John E., and a daughter, Deborah, who died while a small child. My mother was his second wife, whose maiden name was Adeline Shelton, daughter of John and Eve Ann Shelton, and I, M. Otilla, their only daughter--now Mrs. I. P. Daniel. ...his third wife was Lockey Elen Howell, daughter of Patton Howell. Their only child was a daughter, Nannie D., who has been married twice. Her first husband was John R. Newton, a merchant of New Madrid, MO. They had three
sons and a daughter. The sons all died quite young. The daughter married, but I cannot tell you her name or residence now. I understand my sister, Mrs. Newton, has recently married again and now lives in Hickory, KY., but I have not heard direct from her and do not know her present name.[note this important clue!]
"Wm. G. and John E., children of the first marriage, married sisters, daughters of Dr. J. B. Harrison, Union City, TN. Wm. G.'s family consisted of nine children--six now living. Two died in infancy and a son died at age 21.
"John E.'s children were Willie B. and Johnnie, who died at the ages of 11 and 5, and a daughter, Love, who is now married, but I cannot tell you her name or place of residence. My brother, John E., died near Nashville in July, 1894. Brother Will is living...."
