Biography

US Black Heritage Project
Edd Newsome is a part of US Black heritage.

When Edd Newsome was born in February 1871 in Phillips, Arkansas, his father, Whit, was 40 and his mother, Lucinda, was 40. He married Anna Bell Mathews on January 9, 1890, in Phillips County, Arkansas. He had four children by the time he was 24. He died on May 4, 1930, in Marvell, Arkansas, at the age of 59.

In 1880, Edd was 9 years old and lived in L'Anguille, Arkansas with his mother Lucinda, 2 brothers (Felix and Mitchell), and sister Joanna. Felix' wife Tiney and their two children, Whit and Lucinda, also resided in the home, as did niece Lucinda as well.[1] Edd's father, Whit, died in Oct 1879 of an inflammatory liver ailment.

Edd married Anna on January 9, 1890, at the age of 18.[2] In 1900, he was 29 years old and lived in Big Creek, Arkansas with his wife, Anna, son Mitchell, and 3 daughters (Bertha, Azelle, and Alberta). At this point in his life, Edd was able to read, but unable to write. In addition to the four children living at this time, two children (genders and names unknown) had predeceased by now. His neighbors included Dr. John Parrish.[3]

In 1910, Edd was 39 years old and lived in Big Creek, Arkansas with his wife, Anna, son Mitchell and 3 daughters (Bertha, Azelle, and Alberta). Edd was now able to write, in addition to being able to read. He and Anna were renting the land that they were living on and farming.[4]

In 1920, Edd was 49 years old and lived in Big Creek, Arkansas with his wife, Anna. All of his children were now out of the house. The Newsomes, however, picked up a new house guest, Edd's maternal uncle Green Holdman. Green held what appears to be a link to Edd's mother Lucinda's maiden name, and possibly to her parentage (at this time suspected to be Robert Holdman).[5]

In April 1930, Edd was 59 years old and lived in Big Creek, Arkansas with his wife, Anna. The land that they had previously been renting was now owned, and worth about $2,000, a figure that in 2014 would be closer to $28,400.[6] This land, or at least a portion of it, was passed on to Anna Bell's last surviving daughter, Bertha. Bertha, at her passing in 1987, bequeathed a portion of it to each of her grandchildren, with stipulations. Some of Edd's great-grandchildren are still, in 2014, living on land that he farmed a century ago.

Edd Newsome's life ended on 4 May 1930, a month after the 1930 census, while, according to his granddaughter Texanna Gage Albert, he was laying on the couch reading the Sunday paper. It was at this time that Edd suffered a fatal heart attack. He was interred at Coffee Creek Cemetery in Big Creek Township, Phillips County, Arkansas.[7]
