Biography

Henry William Newlands was born in March 1862 in Dartmouth, Nova Scotia, the son of James Newlands and Henrietta Harvey.

At the time of the 1871 Canada Census, James, Henrietta, J Mary, Henrietta, Henry, Jessie, Frederick, and Florence Newland were listed as living in Dartmouth, Nova Scotia, along with Janet Newland, who may have been James' mother, and Mary, William, and Frederica Newland, who may have been his siblings[1].

At the time of the 1881 Canada Census, James, Henyetter, Mary, Henry, Jessie, Fredrick, Florance, John, and James Newlands were listed as living in Halifax, Nova Scotia[2]. At the time of the census, Henry's occupation was listed as "Law Student".

Henry was called to the Nova Scotia Bar in 1883. In 1885, he moved to Prince Albert, North-West Territories, where he practiced law and also served as inspector of land titles offices in the North-West Territories as well as law adviser to the Yukon Executive Council.

At the time of the 1891 Canada Census, Henry Newlands (enumerated as "Newland") was listed as living in Prince Albert, North-West Territories, along with a lodger named Jessie Stewart (possibly Mary's sister)[3]. At the time of the census, Henry's occupation was listed as "Lawyer".

At the time of the 1901 Canada Census, H.W. (enumerated as "N.A."), M.P. (enumerated as "M.J."), G., and E. Newlands were listed as living in Regina, North-West Territories[4]. At the time of the census, Henry's occupation was listed as "Civ Serv Isp Land Titles".

On 5 Feb 1904, Henry was named a Justice of the Supreme Court of the North-West Territories, and continued to hold on to the job following the creation of the province of Saskatchewan in 1905. An article in the Montreal Gazette, on the occasion of Newlands being appointed a judge in the Northwest Terrories, noted that: [5]

Judge Newlands is a Nova Scotian by birth, and received his early training in the same law office as Mr. R. L. Borden.
Judge Newlands is a brother-in-law of F. de G. Stewart, and A. McNaughton Stewart, of Montreal.

At the time of the 1911 Canada Census, Henry, Gwen, and Edina Newlands were listed as living in Regina, Saskatchewan[6]. At the time of the census, Henry was listed as a widower, and his occupation was listed as "Judge".

On 2 Mar 1918, Newlands was named a Judge of the Saskatchewan Court of Appeal; three years later, he was appointed Lieutenant-Governor of Saskatchewan and would remain in office for a decade.

At the time of the 1921 Canada Census, Henry William and Edina Newlands were listed as living in Regina, Saskatchewan, along with four servants[7]. At the time of the census, Henry was listed as a widower, and his occupation was listed as "Lieutenant Governor".

At the time of the 1926 Census, Henry William and Edina Newlands were listed as living in Regina, Saskatchewan, along with a private secretary and three servants[8].

Newlands died in 1954, and is buried in Ross Bay Cemetery, Victoria, British Columbia[9].

Notes

  • The initials for Henry and Mary are completely wrong in the 1901 census, but everything else matches, so it must be them.
