Biography

Harry Joseph Newhall was born May 17, 1862, in Medford, Massachusetts to Josiah Quincy and Angelina Thornton (Cushing) Newhall.

He married Cora Avis Bridgham on September 4, 1888 in Medford. She was born May 18, 1876.

In 1900, Harry and Cora Newhall owned their home (with a mortgage) at 175 Riverside Ave. in Medford. Their children, Bernice, Susan, and Charles lived with them, as well as a live-in servant, 15-year-old Amanda Walton. The children all attended school. Harry was a gold beater.

In 1910, they were still at 175 Riverside. All four of their children lived with them and attended school, Annie, Susan, Chas., and Edward. Harry continued his work as a gold beater. They again had a live-in servant, 16-year-old Erma Taylor.

By 1920, they had paid off their mortgage at 175 Riverside Ave. Their son, Edward lived with them. Harry was still a gold beater and Edward attended school.

In 1930, still at the same address, Harry was a gold beater. He lived with his wife, Cora and their seven-year-old adopted(?) daughter Grace Newhall. Grace is a puzzle. There are no other records for her.

Cora (Bridgham) Newhall died on July 27, 1935, at York, Maine at the age of 68.

Harry Newhall died on July 14, 1939, in Medford at the age of 77.

Medford, July 14 --- Harry J. Newhall, 77, native and lifelong resident of this city, died this morning at his home, 175 Riverside av., following sickness of several months. Interment will be at Oak Grove Cemetery.
Mr. Newhall, a product of the Medford public schools, entered the employ of Charles P. Lauriat, gold leaf manufacturer of Medford in October of 1877. He continued as a gold beater with Mr. Lauriat's son and his successor, A. A. Lauriat, retiring from active work in 1933.
[a long list of his military and civic memberships]
Mr. Newhall is survived by a son, Edward Harry of Winchester; and two daughters, Mrs. Suzanne Blair of Medford, and Mrs. Bernice Bogue with whom he made his home.[1]
