Biography

Nathaniel Sneyd Nesbitt was born on 15 Sep 1804 in Whitmore Co Cavan Ireland son of Thomas Nesbitt. He is mentioned in his claimed fathers will but not as a son but is claimed to be his son on his application for East India Company his brother is John. They were no doubt claimed half brothers. Nathaniel died on 18 Jun 1876 at the age of 71 in Algiers Africa. [1]

Nathaniel Sneyd Nesbitt married 25 Feb 1837 [2] to Elizabeth Adelaide Louisa Gouban (born 30 Nov 1817 in Marylebone, Middlesex, England, baptized on 21 Dec 1817 in St Marylebone, England, [3].She died 7 May 1886 widow of Nathaniel Nesbitt living at on 7 May 1886 at the age of 68 in Italy. [4]) were married on 25 Feb 1837 in Malta. He was 21+, bachelor, from Cavan, Ireland, a Military Officer with the East India Company, in the Bengal Establishment she minor, the daughter of Louisa Gouban, a widow

They were separated in 1861. In 1861 he is living in Jersey and has a so called wife who is a spinster when he died 1876 and his wife is his widow when she died in 1885

Anna Susanna Champion obtained a marriage settlement in 1862 with Nathaniel Sneyd Nesbitt but probably not married. He is living with her and she is called Nesbitt in 1861 and wife in 1871 census and she is the sole executor of his probate Aug 1876 but is then called spinster Anna Susanna Champion, daughter of Abraham Champion and Jane Champion, was born about 1839 in Jersey, Channel Islands. 1851 she lived in St Saviour, Jersey, Channel Islands in Relation to Head of House: Daughter [5]

PROBATE Thomas Nesbitt Esquire extracted from the Registry of his Majesty’s Court of prerogative in Ireland In the name of God Amen I Thomas Nesbitt of Lismore in the County of Cavan Esquire being of sound and disposing mind memory and understanding Do make and publish this my last will and Testament hereby revoking all former wills by me made I order my remains to be decently and privately interred in the most convenient burial ground to the place in which I shall die at the directions of my Executor I leave to my son Cosby Nesbitt and John Nesbitt five shillings each having already amply provided for them they however will know they possess my entire confidence and attention and never were for one moment unworthy of my esteem I order my Executor to call in all money that may be due to me at the time of decease by bond mortgage or otherwise I leave to my son Alexander Nesbitt one thousand pounds I do hereby order and direct that the interest principal of two thousand pounds Sterg at the rate of five per cent per annum be paid to my daughter Mistress Mary Moore half yearly during her life to and for her own sole and separate use without the control of her present or any future husband and her own receipt only to be sufficent discharge of the same and after her death I direct that the sum of two thousand pounds shall become and form a part of my residuary property I leave to Nathaniel Sneyd Nesbitt now at Portarlington school aged about sixteen years the sum of one thousand pounds I leave to his brother Andrew Bell Nesbitt now at the same school aged about fourteen years the like sum of one thousand pounds I leave to the eldest daughter of my son Thomas Nesbitt the sum of five hundred pounds and to the posthumous child of the said Thomas Nesbitt the sum of one thousand pounds but in the event of their dying in my lifetime or under the age of twenty one years I so hereby leave the said legacies or the legacy of whichever of them may happen to be as aforesaid to the other children of my son Thomas Nesbitt lawfully begotten I leave to my friend Allan Nesbitt of Stephens Green attorney the sum of one hundred pounds and as to all the rest residue and remainder of whatever property I may be possessed as after payment of the bequests aforesaid and of all my just debts and funeral expenses including the sum of two thousand pounds here before mentioned after the death of my daughter Mistress Moore I give devise and bequeath the same to my sons John Nesbitt and William Nesbitt in trust that they as soon as convenient may be after my decease lay out and invest the same in Bank or Government Stock or securities in their joint names and I do hereby give and bequeath the interest thereof or the dividends payable therever to my son William Nesbitt for and during his natural llife and his own receipt to be a sufficient discharge for the same and after his death I bequesth the said Bank or Government Stock or securities to his son if more than one to be equally divided between them on attaining the age of twenty one years and if but one child then to the only child and in the event of my said son William dying without having any lawfull issue living at the time of his Death or such issue dying under the age of twenty one years then I give and bequeath the said Band or Government Stock or securities to such of the children of my son John Nesbitt Alexander Nesbitt and Thomas Nesbitt lawfully begotten as shall be living at the time of the death of the said William Nesbitt without lawfull issue as aforesaid to be equally divided between them share and share alike and I do hereby appoint my son William Nesbitt sole executor of this my will dated this twenty third day of August one thousand eight hundred and twenty Thos Nesbitt signed sealed published and declared by the testator as and for his last will and testament in the presence of us who have hereunto at his request in his presence and in the presence of each other Subscribed our names as witnesses Simon Brigly Robert Saunders Danl Harrison On the 26 Feb 1822 admon with the will annexes of the goods of Thomas Nesbitt late of the City of Dublin and a Colonel in the army Esquire deceased was granted to John Nesbitt Esquire the son and surviving Residuary Legatee In trust being first sworn duly to administer William Nesbitt Esquire the son also the sole Executor survived the said deceased but is since dead without having taken upon himself the probate Execution of the said will

A record from East India Company states that Nathaniel Sneyd Nesbitt Lieut. Col. retired 15 Sept 1854 born 29 Sept 1805 (note in 1821 says 1804 and not 1805) wife Elizth Adele Louisa born 30 Nov 1817. He died at Algiers 18 June 1876. This date and place is the same as mentioned in his probate, and is also found (iv). in the GRO Consular Death Indices.
