Cecelia (Nabrit) Adkins is a part of US Black heritage.
Cecelia (Nabrit) Adkins was born in Georgia.
Cecelia Nabrit Adkins was a sister of the celebrated Nabrit brothers, James, Samuel, and Henry. A 1943 Fisk University graduate, she partnered with her husband John in opening the J. W. Adkins Funeral Home (1948), still in operation today. A CPA, she was the first woman named to the Board of Directors of the Federal Reserve Bank of Atlanta, Nashville branch, and was, notably, the first woman of color appointed to the Metro Nashville Board of Education. In 1975 Dr. Adkins, having worked her way up from junior accountant, was elected president of the Sunday School Publishing Board, National Baptist Convention, USA, thus becoming the first woman in the U.S. to head a religious publishing house. In her role as executive director of the Sunday School Publishing Board, she participated in the dedication of Nashville’s Baptist World Center on June 21, 1985. In 1988 she became the first woman to chair the Fisk University Board of Trustees. - written by Kathy Lauder for the Greenwood Project
