Otto was a sailor - he was a heavy drinker and would frequently beat his wife. To an extent that she was scarred by a bottle to the temple.He found religion after the ship he was on broke a bowsprit upon which he was sitting - 3 men fell to their deaths and he survived. In those days ship didn't turn around at sea.
