Biography

Winifred Frances Alice MUNRO was born on 23 Dec 1900 at 35 Warwick Street, Brighton, Sussex, England.^[1] Her parents were William MUNRO, music hall performer (pantomimist), and Frances Winifred MUNRO née KIRBY.^[1] The birth was registered by her mother on 29 Jan 1901.^[1]

On the evening of the 1901 Census, age 3 months, she was staying with her maternal grandparents Thomas and Elizabeth KIRBY at 35 Warwick Street, Brighton, Sussex, England.^[2][3]

On 30 Jul 1908, age 7, she sailed with her parents on the S.S. Cedric from Liverpool, England to New York, USA.^[4] She and her parents were by now using the surname RITCHIE rather than MUNRO. Her father's forename was given as William and her mother's as Winifred.

On 7 Aug 1908, she arrived with her parents in New York at Ellis Island.^[5] The family had previously visited the USA in 1905 and were going to stay at the Manor Hotel in New York. The nearest relative in England was given as Mrs KIRBY of 35 Warwick Street, Brighton.

On 23 Jul 1911, age 10, she arrived with her parents in New York at Ellis Island.^[6] The family's home address was recorded as 364 W. 46th St. in New York and their last residence in England was given as London. They had sailed from Liverpool, England on the S.S. Baltic.
