1931 "Obituary. Thomas Mulligan...Mr. Thomas Mulligan, of 'Pine Hill, Long's Corner, Canowindra district, died suddenly on the morning of September 5. For the past six months or more he had suffered from heart trouble and had received medical advice and attention therefor. On the morning in question about 5 o'clock, he spoke to his wife, and asked if it was not time some of them got up. He then was heard to breathe heavily and in a short while he
had passed away. He had to deliver some sheep he had sold and was anxious to rise early to arrange delivery. The previous day he had been fencing and only a couple of weeks ago he had helped with others in some voluntary
work on the road in his locality.
Mr. Mulligan was 72 years of age and was born at Queanbeyan, being the son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Edward Mulligan. His father died when he was young and his mother remarried. With his parents he came to Cudal, in 1874 when he was 15 years of age. His stepfather was a saddler and the son assisted him. Later he engaged in dam sinking and shearing. He secured Pine Hill,' which was then a property of 75 acres, in the year 1892, and being very successful as a wheat grower and grazier he gradually added to his holding by purchasing land from adjoining owners. He was married at Cranbury, 48 years ago, to
Miss Caroline Wren, daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. Isaac Wren.
They had 11 children, there being nine living, viz : Mrs. J. Gardner, Waverley; Mrs. F. C. Arthur, Lane Cove ; Mrs. A. Campbell, Murga; Mrs. R. J. Goodacre, Canowindra ; Mrs. Clement Wren, Murga; Mr. James Mulligan, Long's Corner Road; Mr. Gilbert Mulligan, Canowindra ; and Messers George and John Mulligan, who reside at home. Two sisters of deceased also survive: Mrs. G. J.
Hay, of Canowindra, and Mrs. James Grenenger, of Sydney.
With her children the widow is left to mourn a great loss.
The late Mr. Mulligan was much interested in horse breeding and racing. His first two horses were Lady Alice, which was the winner of the Forbes and Orange Cups, and Dinna Forget. He bred Giddy Boy, Giddy May, Bluestream and Pine Hill, which were all noted racers and won numerous events, while among others were Roy Dawn and Roy Fortune.
Having lived in the district for so many years, naturally Mr. Mulligan was well-known and with his family was also highly respected.
He was a good neighbor and was a very hard worker.
The funeral was to the Toogong cemetery on the 6th instant, where his remains were interred in the Church of England portion in the presence of a vast cortege, friends coming from Parkes and Orange, as well as all surrounding districts, Rev. F. J. Evans, rector of Cudal, officiated at the ceremony.[1]
