Research Notes

The available sources are consistent with the following scenario, which remains circumstantial:

23 Sep 1794: Susanna Catharine marries Simon Schell in Heidelberg Township, Berks County.

~1794: Susanna Catharine's father and step-mother relocate to Rockingham County, Virginia, where Matthias Tice Muller purchases/owns copious amounts of land.

13 Feb 1797: death of Peter Schell, father of Simon. Although Simon is the oldest son and he would typically inherit the farm, Peter Schell's debts exceeded his assets, so the farm is put up for sale, and Simon Schell is bonded to Simon Scharff.

1800 US census shows Simon Shel as head of household located in Heidelberg, Dauphin, Pennsylvania.[3]

  • 1 male under 10
  • 2 male 26-44
  • 3 females under 10
  • 1 female 26-44

~1800: A number of Matthias Tice Muller's children relocate from Pennsylvania to Rockingham County, Virginia. Possibly, Simon Schell and his wife Susanna Catharine Muller were among them. Simon Schell had lost his inherited land, and perhaps a new opportunity with the in-laws justified migrating to Virginia?

1810: Simon Shell appears on Rockingham, Virginia US census.
