Biography

Elizabeth, the daughter of Roger and Mary Johnson Mowry, was baptised at Salem, Massachusetts Bay Colony, on March 27, 1642/43. She was listed as a recipient of payments from her brother John's estate and was "evidently unmarried."^[1]

Mowry Monument, Woonsocket, Rhode Island

^[3] WIthin the cemetery near Woonsocket, R.I., opposite the Friends' Meeting House, and near the main entrance, there is a unique monument to the Mowry family in America.

Erected in 1896, the monument is five feet and a half square at the base, and sixteen feet high. This monument was erected solely at the expense of Hon. Arlon Mowry to the memory of Roger Mowry and eight generations of his descendants.

Inscriptions include the genealogy of one direct line of nine generations of Mowrys in this country, beginning with Roger, one of the early settlers of Boston, and ending with the children of Arlon Mowry.

These inscriptions include the names of more than 100 different persons, and embrace over a thousand words in telling the story.

Roger Mowry registered in Boston, Massachusetts Bay, after his arrival from England, May 18, 1631. He lived in Plymouth for several years, and later in Salem from about 1635 to 1649. He then removed to Providence, Rhode Island, where he resided till his death on January 5, 1666.

He married Mary, daughter of John Johnson of Roxbury, Massachusetts. She died in January, 1679.
