Biography

The original Geegelup police camp [1]
was opened in 1862, and was located on the Blackwood River at the Lower Blackwood Bridge, with a toilet added around 1866. (the town was renamed Bridgetown, after 1868)

Mounted Constable James Forrest was the first police officer for Geegelup, but his vast district (for patrols) ranged from Donnybrook to Kojonup, Busselton to Walpole, stretching his resources thinly.

Police Constable Abraham Moulton, the first permanent police officer (sent from Bunbury to Geegelup), took over in 1865. Moulton had an Aboriginal Assistant and, periodically, Constable John McAlinden, to help maintain law and order.

This pretty little country township lies nestled in the hills on one of the valleys running down to the Blackwood River. It is 61 miles from Bunbury and is the centre of the Blackwood District. Coming in from the Bunbury Road after passing a few cottages, the Police Station, Post Office and Mechanics' Institute are seen on the left hand, with Mr. Moulton's store opposite. The Police Station is a comfortable brick building with a room doing duty as Court House, where Dr. J. A. O'Meehan attends as Police Magistrate on the last Thursday in every month.
