Nancy Sue Morton, my mother, was born on Friday, March 21, 1924 at 4:00am. She was born at the small Morton home in a mining town in Muhlenberg County, Kentucky. Her father (Ross Morton) in his autobiography recalled the name of that place as Nonnel, Kentucky. Mom’s birth certificate calls that place Tarma, Ky. Neither Nonnel nor Tarma still exist. Both “towns” were probably nothing more than a group of makeshift “shanty’s” that temporarily housed transient coal miners and their families. Both places were east of what was then called Bevier-Cleaton, Kentucky and today just Cleaton. It is midway between Central City and Drakesboro and very close the the famous Paradise Coal Mines where my grandfather Ross Morton was working at the time.
