Lewis was born in 1879^[1] in Skelmanthorpe, Yorkshire^[1]. He was the son of Mary Roberts^[1] and Henry Morton^[1].

In 1881 the Morton family was living in Skelmanthorpe, Yorkshire and consisted of Henry (50, plush cutter), Mary (42), George (21, hawker parafin oil), Mary H (20, fancy woollen shawl [X]), Hy. Ed. (14, no occupation), Clara (12, scholar), Alfred (8, scholar), Morris (3, scholar) and Louis (1). Henry had been born in Manchester, Morris in Clayton West and all other family members in Skelmanthorpe^[1].
