Biography

Melenah Morris was born about 1810 in South Carolina, United States, daughter of Thomas Morris (about 1777–about 1854).

Melenah married Jesse Bartee (born about 1803 in South Carolina; son of Jesse Bartee Sr. and Elizabeth (Rozier) Bartee). Their known children were:

• Ferdinand Bartee (about 1826 – about 1870) .
• Elizabeth Bartee (20 October 1828 – 18 December 1892) .
• Sabra Ann Bartee (about 1830 – after 1885) .
• Susan Bartee (about 1832 – unknown) .
• Eunice Caroline Bartee (22 December 1834 – 24 July 1901) .
• P Frances Bartee (about 1835 – before 1900) .
• Milton Thomas Bartee (about 1836 – 23 August 1849) .
• Harriet Catherine Bartee (12 February 1840 – 3 December 1918) .
• Mary S Bartee (20 January 1842 – 22 March 1902) .
• John Overton Bartee (26 March 1844 – 24 February 1905) .
• Jane Florida Bartee (about 1846 – after 1885) .
• Eliza Ann Bartee (24 March 1848 – 6 January 1909)

Around 1857 Jesse and Melenah left South Carolina and moved to Polk County, Texas. Melenah died sometime after 1885, and was probably buried at Menard Chapel Cemetery, Polk County, Texas.

Research Notes

Maiden name: Many family trees have listed this as Anderson. These were all based upon one faulty "guess" which was then wildly and widely copied. There was no basis for it originally. Sources prove Morris as her maiden name.
