Greetings from the 1776 Project . . .

We're doing our semi-annual check-in to ask whether you have made contributions to the project in the last six months?

Please note that it is a requirement for membership in the 1776 Project that you respond to this check-in. Please post your response as a reply to this message on your page, for convenience of record keeping.

We look forward to hearing from you.

I probably have not done anything in the past 6 months. Just too busy to even do much genealogy in other areans.

It's OK to remove me from this group. Thank you for asking. Sandy

Hi Sandy, I noticed that you added a death date and location on George Chetham's profile. Can you please tell me what source you used to verify that information? It is always best to add the source to the profile. Thanks, Laura
posted by Laura DeSpain
I DID post a source for the death date and location: FamilySearch website. That source comes from GEDCOM data. While it is not authoritative, and there is no death certificate, at least this way folks can determine if they choose to believe it or accept it or not. Sandy

Can you please review the Pre-1700 Profiles help page again. "FamilySearch website", and online user trees are not reliable sources for Pre-1700 profiles. Sources that do not have enough information so that they can be located should be fully formatted so that they can be found. You can find help with formatting on the help page for Sources. You have also created some unsourced Pre-1700 Duplicates it would good to review that page too. Please be careful when creating profiles, it is best to add as much detail as you can when it comes to dates and locations along with a source. That will help keep duplicates from being created. You may also want to review the Honor Code if it has been a while since you have looked at it. There is some good information on that page. These pages are available to guide us all, it will help you to become familiar with them. Thanks, Laura

I did the best that could be done for pre-1700 persons. What would be a good example for birth or death for a person born well before 1700? Birth/death certificates were not in use.
posted by Sandy Morrey
Parish registries were and that is where they are recorded. Yes, they can be hard to locate. There is not a location of death on the profile and that would make it harder to locate. Can you tell me how you figured out the death date? If you do not have a source then it is better to leave it. The profile has a manager and either they or someone who comes across the source can add it.

Hi Sandy, You changed some info on William Corder without any sources listed. I'm trying to be really careful about entering anything into Wikitree that we haven't proven. So I'm curious about the middle name and the birth info you entered. I would LOVE to have proof of those-can you provide it? If not, I would like to remove it and put it in notes as possibilities. It was pretty rare in the 1700's to have a middle name at all--and I haven't seen it on his records. And while it is likely he came from Virginia, again, I haven't yet found proof of that. Can you fill me in, please?

thanks so much! Cyndi Rutledge

Just saw this today. I don't work with Wikitree very often.

To which Wiliam Corder are you referring? I have 4 Williams in my file.

posted by Sandy Morrey
Sorry--I should know better! I am referring to your William Allen Corder born 1771 in Faquier Co., Virginia
posted by Cyndi Rutledge
Well, I'm not sure which change should be explained. The best source I have is R.G. "Bob" Corder, President of the National Corder Family Association. Another source is FamilySearch website; another is Findagrave (ID: 125043333).

Hello Sandy!

Thank you for joining us! I wanted to check in with you to see how things are going. How do you like WikiTree so far? Have the tips in the New Member How To Pages been helpful or have they left you with questions?

P.S. To find reliable sources for your profiles, go to the Family Tree & Tools tab; select Genealogy Research and scroll down near the bottom of that list and select Research with RootsSearch. There are over 20 websites to access from there.

Yes, one question. I would like to change the spelling of a SURNAME. How can I?

Mary Anna Diviney at https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Devinney-4. Her surname was Devinney, and that is not quite correct. It should be Diviney. I changed what I could, but her "formerly" name is still Devinney, and I would like to change that. How? It looks like her family is all DEVINNEY, and if so, then this is likely not the person I want. My source is Find a Grave Memorial 58370248, and there is a cemetery marker there to help support my request.

Sandy,

Please check your personal mail for the answer to this question. Also you mentioned a Nicholas Wildermuth, and I am finding four of them. Would you please let me know what his profile number is?

Thank you.

This is the WIKI page for Nicholas Wildemuth. I have found nothing in my emails for the answer to this question.

Hi Sandy,

Thanks for taking the Pre-1700 Quiz!

Pre-1700 ancestors can be shared by many descendants, so collaboration is essential. You can learn more about joining the community in How To #3 and in the Project FAQ.

The United States Project may fit your research focus. If not, use the Pre-1700 Projects list to find other possibilities. Review the project page to learn about resources and guidelines as well as how to collaborate with the project members.

Have questions? Ask in the comments section of my profile.

Remember to cite reliable sources in pre-1700 profiles you manage, or edit. (See: Pre-1700 Reliable Sources).

Thank you.

Main problem is....it's TOO HARD to reply to a message. WOW! Can you make it even MORE difficult?? It's even TOO HARD to write a statement or ask a question. I could not even update my OWN profile with my OWN father's name. What gives with that?? I'm not allowed to even enter my parents' names???

Hi Sandy,

Thanks for the question. Right now you are still a Guest on WikiTree. Once you Upgrade (completely free) you will be able to add your ancestors and contribute to open profiles that are already here. Here is some information about upgrading:

If you want to communicate with cousins or others about genealogy (whether or not you want to add profiles on our single family tree), you can upgrade at no cost to the Family Member level at any time by adding your genealogy communication preferences.

Help:Membership

To do this, click on the upgrade link on either your navigation or profile page.

Thanks and let me know if you have more questions.

Ginny~WikiTree Greeter

Thank you. Maybe later. This is WAY too complicated.

What is the PURPOSE of registering and upgrading???? Why not make them the same thing......??

posted by Sandy Morrey
Allowing someone to register as a Guest gives them the ability to explore the website to see what it is about and also to post in the G2G Forum. Guest status allows this without any lasting commitment. If someone likes what they see and wants to continue so they can add ancestors and contact members and post to profiles already here, it is one more step to Upgrade to become what we call a Family Member. It is an easy step but an individual decision.

I hope you decide to stay with us as we will look forward to your contributions to our tree. If not, then maybe at a later time. Thank you for your interest and your questions.

Ginny~WikiTree Greeter

Thank you for your reply. It's TOO HARD to do ANYTHING on this site. Hard to reply to a comment, hard to MAKE an inquiry, impossible to even enter my OWN father's name on my OWN profile page. Why make it SO HARD to do anything?
posted by Sandy Morrey
Sandy, to enter your father and/or mother - go to your profile page and click on the Edit tab (in green strip across center of page). On the edit page look on the right side. There will be "father" and then underneath that "mother". Click on father and a new page will open where you will enter the information, be sure to click on "Save" before closing the page. Then you can add your mother.

I hope this helps. Ginny

Real problems here. I am trying to add a second spouse for my uncle. I have NO IDEA when she was born or when she died. It will not let me leave these fields blank when I try to add the lady, even if I click on "leave blank for privacy". It ALSO says that her marriage in 1981 was AFTER her husband died in 2008. Now, we KNOW that 1981 was not after 2008. So, how should these issues be handled???
posted by Sandy Morrey
Yes, this helps a LOT. I have entered my parents, and I am entering their ancestors also!

How does one enter a SECOND marriage???

I would like to be added to the TRUSTED list. I have found my g-grandmother has an entry, and I added an entry.....noting came up as I was adding my entry to tell me that there was already one out there. I am CERTAIN that there are TWO Lucy Belle Donoho entries, both the same. Also her husband Milford Hill Donoho now has two different entries....both are the same. I would like to MERGE each.

I am trying to add a parent to one of my ancestors, pre-1700 birth. It says I cannot enter the data because I have not completed the Pre-1700 Self Certification. Well, I tried, and I answered all of the questions correctly. But I have not yet been here for 1 week, so I could not "complete" the self certification. Therefore, I cannot edit pre-1700 items????
