Alberto di Morra was born about 1100-1105 in Benevento, Papal States.[1] His father was Sartorius di Morra, a nobleman.[1]
He joined the Premonstratensian or Norbertine order and was a canon at St Martin's Abbey in Laon.[1]
He was one of two legates dispatched by Alexander III to investigate the murder of St Thomas a Becket.[2]
He was elected pope at Ferrara on 21 October 1187 and took the name Gregory VIII. He was consecrated on 25 October 1187.[3][2] He also crowned Alfonso II of Portugal.[2]
He died at Pisa, Vatican States on 17 December 1187 after a pontificate of 1 month and 27 days and was buried in the cathedral of Pisa.[3][2]
