It did not get him out of Worcester as first orders were to attend Worcester Polytechnic Institute. But after one semester, the Navy closed down V-5 in Worcester and sent cadets to Stevens Institute in New Jersey. 1948. Jacksonville, Duval, Florida, USA. Received Naval Aviator Wings as Midshipman. One of a handful of who came to be known as the Flying Midshipman. In pre-flight class was Jesse L Brown, the first black American to attend Naval flight training - in 1973 Jesse had a ship named after him.[5]
