Jenkin was born in about 1817 in Llanbadarn Trefglwys, Cardiganshire, Wales. He was the son of David Morgan and Ann Jenkins.^{[1][2][3][4][5][6]}

When Jenkin was about 22 he married Mary Morgans OR Williams on 16 July 1839 in Aberystwyth, Ceredigion, Wales. The couple had 13 children: David Morgan, Mary Morgan, John Morgan, Thomas Morgan, Elizabeth Morgan, Eleanor Morgan, Benjamin Morgan, William Morgan, Anne Morgan, Joseph Morgan, Maria Morgan, Sarah (triplet) Morgan and Margaret Morgan.
