Notes

Note N57Newspaper Article found in Bible of Elfrieda Klohs Moore: MOORE TURKEYS PROVE FEEDING PENS WORTH - Shiner - Can turkeys be raised profitably in this area without having to graze on open range land?? A Lavaca County man says "yes". Ras Moore of Dreyer recently furnished 1,663 turkeys for the Thanksgiving market. They came from feeding pens on a small 4-acre tract. And they provided Moore with ,248.45 net profit for six months of part-time work. Here's how! Moore bought 1,000 poults April 20, and another 1,000 on April 27, at 65 cents each. The poults were kept in a brooder house for 12 weeks until they got a good start. After that period, they were moved into pens where they were fattened with commercial feeds. A moderate mortality rate of 16.85 per cent trimmed the flock to 1.663 birds during the experiment. In six months, the flock consumed 26,250 pounds of grain and 94,100 pounds of starter and growing chow. The total feed of 120,350 pounds produced 28,810 pounds of meat, or an average of 4.17 pounds of feed for 1 pound of meat. Moore estimated that the turkeys consumed 72.3 (pounds) of feed per bird. His 838 tom turkeys averaged 20.8 pounds of weight each at the end of feeding and brought 38 cents per pound. The 825 hens averaged 13.6 (pounds) and sold for 38 1/2 cents per pound. The market total of his flock was 28,810 pounds which grossed ,133.20. On the debit side of the ledger, the cost of feed and labor amounted to ,884.75 The final total shows a profit of ,248.45. Not bad for six months of spare time work, Moore figures. And he didn't need a lot of land.

Comments by Rex Moore, Jr.: Uncle Ras was a rather heavy-set man about 5'-8" tall and with black wavy hair. In the face, he looked very much like his father W.S. Moore. Uncle Ras lived all of his life in the Dreyer Community. When he and Aunt Leona married, they lived on land on the Guadalupe River that Aunt Leona had inherited from her father. Uncle Ras farmed and raised cattle and chickens for a living. He had six or eight chicken houses on his place at the river - each house holding several thousand baby chickens. He'd raise these chicks from babies to about 8 weeks old and then sell them as fryers.
