The work "Family of Montgomery" has John of Giffen as son of Robert's brother Alexander, 1st Lord Montgomery rather than this Robert of Giffen with not apparant rationale. Scotland Magazine mentions the younger Robert going to France in 1480 and says nothing of his parentage but does confuse things by referring to him as Robert 1st Lord of Montgomery: a conflation of his father, Robert of Giffen, and his uncle, Alexander 1st Lord of Montgomery.

Per Thomas Harrison Montgomery, A genealogical history of the family of Montgomery: including the Montgomery pedigree (Philadelphia: H. B. Ashmead, 1863), p. 145, his son was Sir Adam Montgomerie, Knight of Giffen who succeeded him. Sources T H Montgomery cited are 1) Douglas' Baronetage, Burkes Commoners Antiq. and 2) Douglas' Baron. vol. i, 525. Per T H Montgomery, Sir Adam lived in the times of James II and III. Sir Adam divided his lands between his two sons Alexander, to whom he gave part of the lands of Giffen and Sir John Montgomerie, to whom he gave the lands of Keithedis, Hesylheads, Bangry, &c. The son Alexander of Giffen left a son Adam Montgomerie of Giffen who had seven sons, two of which are Adam and Troilus, the progenitor of the Macbie Hill Family. It would be excellent if these Macbie Hill descendants of Sir Robert Montgomerie, Knight of Giffen were added by an individual in the Scotland Project.
