The following transcript of the rejected Revolutionary War Bounty land claim clearly shows that Margaret Eagleton was the daughter of John Montgomery (image to the right)
State of Illinois)...Before me, a Justice if peace in and
Peoria County).....for Peoria County, Illinois aforesaid Personally appeared Susannah MILLS of said County and State, and who personally will known to me, as a person of high credibility, who, being of lawful age, and first duly sworn, according to law, doth on her oath declare that she, Susannah MILLS, alias MONTGOMERY was the daughter of the late John MONTGOMERY a pensioner of the United States in the [ill] of the Illinois [ill] who died in this Peoria County on the 26th day of January 1845; that one son of said John MONTGOMERY was Joseph, who died about eight years old. 2nd Samuel, who died at the age of twenty one, having never married, died without issue. 3rd Alexander (who married Barbara HARRIS, and died in Franklin County, Indiana, leaving for heirs – 1st Elisabeth MONTGOMERY – 2nd Susannah MONTGOMERY decd – 3rd Nathaniel –4th John – 5th Samuel Walker – 6th William – 7th Jane – 8th Margaret) 4th Jane COPLETT alias MONTGOMERY who died 3 years ago last Autumn in Knox County in this State (leaving children – Elisabeth, Sarah, James,John, Margaret and Martha COPLETTS) 5th John MONTGOMERY – 6th Anna WATSON alias MONTGOMERY 7th Martha ALLEN – alias Montgomery -8th Margaret EAGLETON – 9th Sarah [ill] and 10th [ill] Elisabeth MONTGOMERY – alias HARRIS widow of the deceased pensioner and mother of this deponent. that this deponent knoweth not the services, nor the names of the late father’s officers – except Col. (perhaps William) CAMPBELL – but deponent will have to refer to the proof already adduced
Notice the 8th in the list of the above children.
Biography
Margaret Montgomery was born in October 1802 in Tennessee.
She married James Eagleton (1794–1877) in 1818[1].
She passed away at age 71 in November 1873 in Crawford County, Illinois and was buried in New Hebron Cemetery, New Hebron, Crawford County, Illinois.[2]
