George was born in 1821. George Monroe ... He passed away in 1899. [1]
George Washington Monroe was born in Virginia, July 21, 1821. Married Sarah Anne Smith in October 1844 in Fayette County, Ohio, USA.[2] All ten of their children, two of which died in infancy, were born there. [3][4]
They moved to Sullivan County Indiana in 1870 [5]and purchased 80 acres of farmland four miles northwest of Carlisle for $800.
"George Washington Monroe came to Sullivan county in the spring of 1870. My father (Ben) was 7 years old. Grandpa and the five older boys came through Indianapolis in two covered wagons - it took them two months to make the trip. On arriving at the old home place they built a large log house about 300 yards southeast of the present house on the same location. Bought the 80 acres for $10.00 per acre. Planted it with watermelons and sold them on the square. In the fall grandma and the other kids came to Vincennes on the railroad and then up to Carlisle. Grandpa and the older boys met them there with a big wagon to haul their trunks and boxes. There was not a bridge or a gravel road in Sullivan County at that time. To my knowledge Grandpa never left Sullivan County until he died in 1899." [6][7]Find A Grave: Memorial #9486295
George worked his farm and remained in Sullivan County until his death at 77 in 1899. George and Sarah's surviving seven sons and one daughter all remained in Sullivan County their entire lives. Four of the sons, James, George, Hugh and Benjamin Franklin Monroe, married and some of their descendants continue to farm the land in Sullivan County. John, Joseph, Anna, and Richard never married and lived on the farm as a family of siblings with the eldest, John becoming the head of the household after his parent's death. Anna died at age 50 compared to her brothers.
Notes on G.W. Monroe's parents:
Parents are not proven conclusively, but likely correct for the following reasons.
The evidence the that George Monroe is the father of George Washington Monroe is circumstantial based on a will book from Fayette, Ohio that lists items bought form the estate of Samuel Webster who was the husband of Judith (Monroe) Webster. This assumes that Judith was sister to this George in this history[8] and aunt to George Washington Monroe. Further family connections are indicated in the 1840 census for Scioto, OH a William Pool lived next to Elizabeth Monroe[9]. William Pool was married to Mary Monroe who is likely George's sister, therefore Elizabeth Monroe is likely Mary and George's mother. Mary shows up again in the 1850[10] and 1860[11] census as the head of household living next to George in Union Fayette, OH. Mary's maiden name is established on the death certificate of one of her children Peter[12].
If this history[8] is correct than this line of Monroes is linked back to Andrew Monroe.
