Lieutenant John Monroe served with 5th Virginia Regiment (1776), Continental Army during the American Revolution.

John Monroe is a DAR Patriot Ancestor, A081113.

Lieutenant John Monroe was born November 10, 1749, in Westmoreland county, Virginia, a son of William Monroe and Jemima (Smith) Monroe. John served as both an enlisted man and an officer during the American Revolutionary War. He served under Captain Washington, Captain Nelson and Captain Monroe, in the commands of Colonel Peachy of the 5th Virginia Regiment, Colonel Lee, Colonel Lane and Colonel Page. Lieutenant Monroe's pension number is *S31267 [1]

On December 17, 1778 John married Winnifred Berryman, daughter of William Berryman, Sr. and Rebecca (Vowels) Berryman. [2] Applications for membership in the Society of the Daughters of the American Revolution have been made by the descendants of the following children of Lieutenant John Monroe and Winnefred (Berryman) Monroe:

  • Mary Ann Monroe, who married Robert T. Bell
  • Andrew Birch Monroe, born November 24, 1794, in Westmoreland county, Virginia, died April 1862, in Ohio county, Kentucky, married Ailsa/Ailsey Q. Harris

Lieutenant Monroe died May 25, 1837, in Ohio county, Kentucky and is buried in the Bethel Cemetery, in Horton, Ohio County, Kentucky. [3]
