Biography

Emma Monk was born in 1874 at Ducklington in Oxfordshire the daughter of Charles Monk and his wife Charlotte, born Charlotte Brooks [1] [2] [3] [4].

In 1881 she was living at Cokethorpe Lodge in Ducklington with her parents Charles and Charlotte Monk and their other children. Her age was given as 6, implying a birth date in 1874 or 1875. Her birthplace was given as Ducklington, Oxfordshire. She was at school [2].

In 1891, Emma Monk was living at Crawley in Oxfordshire as a servant in the household of Mary Cook, a farmer. Her age was given as 16, implying a birth date in 1874 or 1875. Her birthplace was given as Ducklington, Oxfordshire [5].

On 31 March 1901 Emma Knibbs was living at 1 Russell Street in New Osney in Oxford with Richard Knibbs, her father- and mother-in-law James and Eve Knibbs, her step-children Florence and Richard, and her sister in law. She is described as James Knibbs's daughter in law, and it seems clear that she has been recorded as Richard Knibbs's wife, although do not seem to have been formally married for another two weeks. Her age was given as 28, implying a birth date in 1872 or 1873. [Her age may have been slightly overstated to bring it closer to her husband.] Her birthplace was given as Ducklington, Oxfordshire [4].

Richard Knibbs, a widower aged 40, a labourer of 1 Russell Street, Osney, son of James Knibbs, labourer; and Emma Monk, aged 28, a domestic servant of 1 Russell Street, Osney, daughter of Charles Monk, labourer; were married on 14 April 1901 at the church of St Frideswide in New Osney in Oxford [3].

In 1911 Emma was living at Church Cottage at Binsey in Oxfordshire with her husband Richard and their children. Her age was given as 38, implying a birth date in 1872 or 1873. Her birthplace was given as Ducklington, Witney. Her marriage to Richard was said to have lasted 11 years, and they had had 4 children, all still living [6].
