Biography

Sarah was born to Aaron Mittenthal and Betsy Witstein in 1865 in Wistinelz, Russia Poland. The family emigrated to the United States when she was 7 years old and lived in New York City.

She married Harris Copland in 1885 and they had 5 children: Ralph in 1888; Leon in 1891; Laurine in 1892; Josephine in 1894 and Aaron in 1900. Aaron would become one of the most famous American composers of the 20th century.

Harris ran a local department store in Manhattan and the family lived above the store for most of the children's growing up period. The family attended Congregation Baith Israel Anshei Emes.

Sarah was musically gifted and sang and played the piano and made sure all the children had music lessons. She was a great supporter of Aaron in his early career.

She died sometime between 1940 and 1945 as she is listed in the 1940 US Census, but Harris is listed as a widower on his death certificate.
