Biography

Edwin, son of Jane Ursula Mitchell, was born on 11 August 1847 in Landewednack, Cornwall, England.[1] No father was listed in Edwin's birth certificate.

1851 Census: In the 1851 census, Edwin (age 3), Scholar, was the grandson of Thomas Mitchell in Landewednack, Cornwall, England. He was living with single mother and his maternal grandparents.[2]

Edwin's mother married Joseph Hendy on 27 December 1855 in Landewednack, Cornwall, England.[3] Edwin continued to live with his grandparents and can be found living with them until he got married.

Edwin Henry Mitchell (bachelor, fisherman, son of Henry Mitchell Jnr, shopkeeper) married Emma Kemp (spinster, residing in Churchtown, daughter of dec’d laborer) by banns on 24 May 1868 in Landewednack, Cornwall, England.[4] Together they had the following children:

  1. Thomas Mitchell, born 1868 in the Helston district.[5][6][7]
  2. Mary Jane Mitchell, born 1870 in the Helston district.[8] Mary died at the age of 2 months while residing in Lizard Town and was buried on 23 April 1870 in Landewednack, Cornwall, England.[9]
  3. Edwin Henry Mitchell, born 1871 in the Helston district and baptised the son of Edwin Henry Mitchell(Laborer) & Emma residing in Crofs Common, was baptised on 17 April 1885 in Landewednack, Cornwall, England.[10][7][11][12]
  4. William John Mitchell, born 1873 in the Helston district and baptised son of Edwin Henry(Labourer) & Emma, on 17 April 1885 in Landewednack, Cornwall, England.[13][14][7]
  5. James's birth was registered in the Jan-Feb-Mar quarter of 1878 in the Helston district.[15] James died at the age of 2½ while residing in Lizard Town and was buried on 25 May 1880 in Landewednack, Cornwall, England.[16]

This Edwin is not the same as Edwin Mitchell who was baptised on the same day and in the same place as Elizabeth Mitchell, also a child of Thomas Mitchell (Labourer) & Mary residing in Lizard Town, was baptised on 21 April 1848 in Landewednack, Cornwall, England.[41][42]

There are two other families with the father’s surname Mitchell & mother’s surname Kemp, however, their children are not born in Cornwall.

  1. Alfred Mitchel & Harriet Kemp married in the district of Sevenoaks in the first quarter of March 1845.[43]
    1. Clara Elizabeth Mitchell’s birth was registered in the Jul-Aug-Sep quarter of 1876 in the Malling district.[44]
