Robert enlisted for military service 14 Jul 1915. SERN 707. Then aged 22 years. Enlisted with 30th Battalion. Rank; Private. The 30th Battalion was an infantry battalion of the Australian Army. It was originally formed in 1915 during the First World War as part of the all-volunteer Australian Imperial Force (AIF) and saw service on the Western Front (France & Belgium) before being disbanded in 1919 [1]. The battalion's first major action came at Fromelles on 19 July 1916 where they were initially tasked to provide a supporting role, carrying ammunition to the assault troops, but they were later committed to the fighting as the situation deteriorated for the Australians. After the battle, the 30th were employed in mainly defensive duties holding parts of the line for the rest of 1916 [2]. He was wounded in action 24 Jul 1916. Promoted to Corporal. Transferred to 3rd ANZAC Light Railways Company. Promoted to Sergeant. Transferred to 4th Army. Awarded the Military Medal 30 Dec 1917 (bravery in battle). Promoted to Warrant Officer (WO2). Evacuated wounded. On return to the line, France, promoted to CSM (?company sergeant major?). Promoted to L/Cpl (?Lance corporal). Returned to Australia 30 Apr 1919. Discharged from service 21 Feb 1920.

"The following extracts from London Gazettes are published for information.... HIS MAJESTY THE KING has been graciously pleased to approve of the award of the Military Medal for bravery in the field to the undermentioned non-commissioned officers and men:— ... R. C. Mitchell, Railway Operating Company;"[3]

"At Sydney, Robert C. Mitchell, only son of the late Mr. R. W. Mitchell of Dubbo, and Mrs. Mitchell of Darlington was married to Eileen, daughter of Mr. Costello of Newtown"[4].
