Biography

When I was really little, under 5, we would visit the Icetons. These were Mrs Iceton (Janet (Robson) Iceton (1892-1986)), and her husband Uncle Charlie (Charles Iceton (1893-1967))who lived on the Rokeby Estate as farmer/gardeners. They weren't related, but Aunty Pam and my Mum were both pregnant in 1944, and being the war they were evacuated to stay with the Istons in Rokeby near Barnard Castle to have their babies. Aunty Pam had David and Kenny and my Mum had Peter. Peter was christened in Rokeby Chapel nearby and Mrs I. and uncle C are now buried there. Mrs Iceton was a midwife and nurse so ideal to help with all the babies.

When I was about 3 and visiting Aunty Pam in Middlesborough we would be taken to visit the Icetons. I think we went several times and I have memories of the house - it was a bit shabby and grubby and there were glass cases of stuffed birds up the stairs. Mrs. I wouldn't let Uncle C. join us for meals as apparently his table manners were not good!

I remember playing in a barn where cows were brought in for milking. We would crawl along the mangers with straw in them. I remember Uncle C. squirting milk into my mouth direct from the cows, and the milk being cooled and put into milk churns to be collected. Also climbing into hen houses and collecting the eggs. Uncle C. tossed me an egg to catch, but of course I dropped it and it broke and everyone laughed. I have a vague memory of broken down cars on the main road and old petrol pumps and oily concrete, but not sign of that now. We would go to the Morrit Arms Hotel just by Greta Bridge a short walk away, as Aunty Pam and Mum liked to go there for a Guiness, and we would have lemonade and crisps. I recall the big gates to the Estate and Peter and I sitting on a log to have our picture taken.

There were big greenhouses with hot water pipes running through them to heat the tomatoes etc. they were warm and humid with a lovely smell and lots of tiny green ferns growing in the metal grating floor. We loved chasing tiny frogs about.

Welcome Jane, and thank you for upgrading, 😊

I am very pleased to welcome you to the WikiTree family, your contributions will go a long way to joining the world together.

It is best to start with the New Member How-To pages, they will save you a lot of time and frustration.

I am here to answer any question you have, no matter how trivial you may think it is. There is no such thing as a silly question. Please add as much information as you can, it all helps to turn a “name” back into a person. I hope you enjoy the site as much as I do.

Thank you for adding your DNA to WikiTree. Getting the Best from DNA will tell you more about how DNA kits are used on WikiTree.

You mentioned that you don’t know much about your family tree yet. I assume you are new to genealogy. No problem! Every genealogist is a beginner at some point.

Take your time, keep track of sources and ask questions. Check here for tips.

Happy tree climbing
