Biography

John Miller was born on September 18, 1758 in Walpole, Bristol, Lincoln County, Province of Maine, Massachusetts Bay Colony. He was the son of James and Annas (McCurdy) Miller (aka Millar). John is named in his father's will executed on July 2, 1764 in Walpole, Bristol, Lincoln County. Other vital data of his birth and parentage are provided in the NEHGR, Vol. XCIV. See source below.

John married Ruth Carr on March 10, 1780 in Thomaston, Lincoln County, Province (now State) of Maine. Before 1790 he and Ruth had settled in Alias Bucks (now Bucksport, Maine). By 1800, they had relocated to Hampden, Hancock (now Penobscot) County. By 1817, he moved one last time to Williamsburg (Maine) where he passed away in 1820.

John and Ruth had at least the following children: Robert b. in Thomaston on January 13, 1783 (m. Sally Mitchel); 2) Benjamin b. in Bucktown, April 28, 1792 (m. Betsey Swan); Ruth b. in Hampden November 17, 1803 (m. William Bunker).

Other children reportedly include James, b. 1780; Mary Polly b. 1786; Betsy b. 1788; John Jr. b. 1789; and Timothy b. abt. 1794. Federal Censuses are commensurate regarding household member enumerations. Son James b. about 1780 in Thomaston, m. Sarah Buck and resided in Hampden. Daughter Mary Polly b. abt. 1786 likely in Buckstown, m. Zenas Dexter and lived in Exeter, Maine in 1820 adjacent to brother Timothy and in Hampden adjacent to her brother James per the 1850 Fed. Census. Son John Jr., b. about 1789 in Bucktown (now Bucksport, Maine), m1 Betsy Kimball (filed marriage intention on May 22, 1813), m2 Lucinda Felker and resided in Hermon, Penobscot County. John Miller Jr. purchased property in Hermon bordering Timothy Miller and J. Pomeroy for which he is on the 1816 tax rolls.

In 1790 (with some speculated names), John's household included 1 male over 16 (self), 3 males under 16 (James, Robert, and John Jr.), and 3 females (wife Ruth, and daughters Mary Polly and Betsey).

In 1800 (with some speculated names), John's household included 3 males under 10 (Benjamin, John Jr. and Timothy); 1 male 16-25 (Robert); 1 male 26-44 (self); 1 female under 10 (Unknown Female-1); 2 females 10-15 (Mary Polly and Betsey); and 1 female 26-44 (Ruth, wife).

In 1810 (with some speculated names), John's household included 1 male 10-15 (Benjamin); 2 males 16-25 ( John Jr. and Timothy); 1 male 26-44 (Robert); 1 male over 45 (self); 1 female under 10 (Ruth); 1 female 10-15 (Unknown Female-1); and 1 female over 45 (Ruth, wife). Son James is head of his own household in 1810.

John passed away in Williamsburg, Maine on September 5, 1820. John was living with his son Robert when he passed away, since 1 male over 45 was enumerated in Williamsburg's 1820 Fed. Census. And Ruth is likely the female (over 45) living with their son Benjamin as also enumerated in same Census and living adjacent to brother Robert.
