Biography

Elsie was born in 1909. She passed away in 1990. She was the daughter of Martin Mathis Miller (1883–1926) and Amelia C. Witte Miller (1886–1983) who married August 29, 1904, in Jo Daviess County, Illinois. Both parents had been born in Germany and emigrated in 1895.

In 1910, baby Elsie lived in Dubuque with her parents, Martin (age 25) and Amelia "Millie" (age 23) Miller, and her sister, Bertha (age 4). Martin worked in a tin shop. Elsie's maternal grandparents, August and Ernestina Witte, lived next door.

In 1920, Elsie (age 10) lived in Dubuque with her parents, Martin (age 35) and Amelia Miller (age 34), and her sister, Bertha (age 14). Martin was a streetcar conductor. Bertha sewed buttons on overalls in a factory.

In 1925, Elsie (age 16) lived in Dubuque with her parents, Martin (age 40) and Amelia (age 39).

On January 9, 1926, Elsie (age 17) married Oscar H. Smothers in Dubuque. They had the following children:

Marie Violet Smothers Ludovissy 1 October 1926–After 1950

Jeanette Bertha Smothers Plowman 1927–2019

Ester Ida Smothers 1929–Deceased

Lester Alfred Smothers 1931–1931

In 1940, Elsie (age 31) was divorced and living in Dubuque with daughters Marie (age 13), Jeannette (age 12), and Esther (age 10). Ernest LaStant (age 31) lodged with them. Ernest was a laborer in a hide and wool shop. Elsie and Ernest would later marry.
