HIS HOMESTEAD ON THE TOWNSITE
The Late Sid Miller's Farm Was on North Main Street.
HEART OF CITY NOW
Settled Here 53 Years Ago -- The Old Pioneer Died Last Night.
Sidney D. Miller, aged 77, one of the first settlers on the townsite of Hutchinson, who located a homestead claim here 53 years ago on the site where Hutchinson now stands, died Monday night at the home of his son, Alfred Miller, 1 1/4 miles south of the State Reformatory.
The funeral will be held Thursday afternoon from the home of his daughter, Mrs. C. M. Rayl, 209 Ninth ave., east, interment at Eastside cemetery. Rev. A. J. Beil, pastor of Zion Luthern church officiating.
His Farm on Townsite.
"Side" Miller, as he was known to all old residents, was a native of New Lenox, Mich., born in 1847. He came to Kansas in 1871, locating on a homestead claim on what is now the heart of the leading residence district of Hutchinson. His homestead farm of 1871 was on what is now North Main street, between Tenth and Seventeenth streets.
Many of the fine old trees in that section of the city were planted by Mr. Miller on his "farm," which before many years became a part of the city. He was here before the railroad, and he used to haul feed and supplies by wagon from Wichita.
In Days of Privation.
He experienced the privations of all the pioneer settlers. He collected buffalo bones on the prairie to purchase the furniture in his home. He built the old house at the corner of Eighth and Poplar, at 202 Eighth avenue east, where he lived for almost fourty years.
Mr. Miller is survived by his son, Alfred, in Clay township, and his daughter, Mrs. C. M. Rayl, of Hutchinson, and by a sister, Mrs. Olive Ramsey, of Denver, Col.
