Biography

Harry was born on a farm in Polk County, Iowa, the son of David and Emily (Blood) Miller. [1] [2] In 1910 and 1920, the Miller farm was located in Camp Township, the southeasternmost township in Polk County. [3] [4]

Harry married Bertha Mae Hawkins in November 1927.[5] [6] They had a son named Harry L. Miller in about August 1928.[7] The 1940 US Census lists three children: Harry L., age 12; Layton L., age 4; and Mary L., age 5/12.[8]

Harry is buried in Vandalia Cemetery next to his wife, Bertha. The inscription on the headstone includes their wedding date as 2 November 1927, and lists that they are the parents of Lavern, Layton, Mary, and Mildred. [6]

Research Notes

The 1910 Census places the Dave Miller family next door to the family of Arthur Blood. This is likely a sibling of Dave's wife Emily, but more research would be required to prove this connection. Both Arthur and Emile have parents born in Maine (father) and Indiana (mother). Number of dwelling: 144
Arthur Blood, head
Ada, wife
Eva, daughter
Elmer, son
Lewis, Father
Number of dwelling: 145
Dave E. Miller, head
Emile, wife
Mable, daughter
Lewis, son
Icle, daughter
Charley, son
Harry, son
Ona, daughter
[3]

Similarly, the 1920 Census lists the Dave Miller family initially as another Blood family, but crossed it out and wrote in Miller. They were living next door to an Ira and Manchie Blood, with Lewis P. Blood listed as the father, similar to the entry for Arthur Blood in the 1910 Census. Arthur and Ada's family are listed immediately after the Miller family in the 1920 Census.[4]
