Biography

Julius Joseph Melzer was born in Bohemia, now a province of Germany, on 27 May 1880. He was the first of his family to emigrate to America but did so sometime after the family had migrated to Russia and also did so, apparently, via Canada. His certificate of naturalization provides his name and date of birth and states that he was either born in or allegiant to Russia, arrived in Detroit, Michigan in August 1896, and was naturalized on 14 October 1904.^[1] On a 1904 Ellis Island ship's manifest for his father, Joseph, and two other children states that they would be joining Joseph's son Julius Melzer.^[2]

On 15 May 1906, Julius J. Melzer and Mary J. Kreyci were married in Chicago.^[3] Sadly, however, Julius died in Chicago barely three months later. His death record states that he was age 26, married, and a plumber. It states also that he was born in Bohemia and died 16 August 1906 in Chicago; further that both his parents were born in Bohemia.^[4]

Interestingly, all four of Julius's brothers appear in one or more records with Joseph as their middle names. It is reasonable to assume, therefore, that his middle initial J. also stood for Joseph.
