Biography

Scottish flag
Janet (Melville) Sharpe was born in Scotland.

Jessie (also Janet) McGavan Greig Melville, daughter of Andrew Melville (1829-bef.1871) and Mary (Duncan) Melville (1819-1879), was born on 4 July 1853 in Ferry-Port-on-Craig (Tayport), Fife, Scotland.[1]

In 1861, 7 year old Ann, was at Albert Street, Ferry-Port-on-Craig with her mother and three siblings. [2] In 1871, 19 year old Jessie was with her brother David Cross Melville (1848-bef.1888), sister-in-law Catherine Scott and 3 year old nephew William, at Butler Wynd, Ferry Port on Craig, Fife. [3]

Jessie (as Janet) Melville and John Chalmers were married at Ferry-Port-on-Craig, Fife on 5 December 1873.[4][5] Children from this marriage were:

  • Thomas Chalmers (1879-)[6]
  • William Melville Chalmers (1881-)[7][8]
  • Mary Duncan Chalmers (1883-)[9]
  • Catherine Cant Chalmers (1886-)[10]
  • John Chalmers (1888-)[11]

In 1881, Janet, John and sons Thomas and William were in St Peter, Angus, Scotland.[12]

Janet's husband John Chalmers died in 1888 in Burntisland, Fife, Scotland at age 42.[13]

The couple’s fifth child, John, was born 3 months after his father’s death, on 19 July 1888, in Dundee. [14]

On 23 September 1890, Janet married Charles Wilson Sharpe in St Mary, Dundee, Angus, Scotland.[15] Children from this marriage were:

  • Charles Wilson Sharpe (1892-1938)
  • Isabella Wilson Sharpe (1894-)

Janet and her children Thomas, William Melville, Mary Duncan, Catherine Cant and John, all travelled to Sydney, New South Wales, Australia aboard the Lusitania via Colombo, Sri Lanka and King George Sound, Adelaide, Melbourne, leaving England on 5 December1890.[16]

Research Notes

Janet's death date is after the birth of her daughter in 1894 and before the death of her son in 1938. She is presumed to have died in New South Wales, Australia where her husband and children were all living. The Dunfermline, Fife, Scotland death is not that of Jessie.[17]

Janet's second husband Charles Wilson Sharp may have sailed to Sydney, Australia aboard the RMS Ormuz three days after his marriage to Janet,[18][19] with Janet and her children following 3 months later.
