Biography

Henry Mellus was born on 24 August 1816 in Dorchester, Suffolk, Massachusetts to William Mellus and Amelia (Lyon) Mellus. ^[1]

• Went to sea with Richard Henry Dana, author of "Two Years Before the Mast." They had been classmates @ Harvard College.
• Came to the California coast for the first time on the brig PILGRIM as an apprentice to the hide trade business. When PILGRIM reached Monterey in 1835, at the request of Alfred Robinson, Mellus was transferred from the ship to become a clerk.
• Went into business with William Davis Merry Howard, an old friend from his early teenage years in New England, purchasing the failing Hudson Bay Company in San Francisco, just as the Gold Rush struck Sacramento.
• Married Anita F. Johnson in 1846. Together they became the parents of Henry S. Mellus, Anita Erulana (Mellus) Tileston. Gertrude R. (Mellus) Ledyard, Isabella Guirado (Mellus) Haverstick, Frederick Commonforth (Frederico Carillo ) Mellus, , & Adelaida Elena (Mellus) Hamilton.
• Mayor of Los Angeles, 1860 (died in office). Buried at Old Calvary Cemetery in Los Angeles, Los Angeles Co., California ^[2]
