Margaret Helen Meggy was born in 1890 in Darlinghurst, New South Wales (Australia). She was the second daughter of English-born Percy Robert Meggy and United States-born Sarah Myrtle Boone. [1] The family soon after settled in nearby Paddington, [2] and later at 23 Aubin Street, Neutral Bay. [3] She was ten years of age when New South Wales joined the other British Colonies to federate as the Commonwealth of Australia.
Margaret became a nurse, training and then working at Sydney Hospital. [3]
On 12th August 1915, just days after the death at Gallipoli of one of her brothers, Margaret was commissioned in the Australian Imperial Force's Australian Army Nursing Service as a Staff Nurse. [4] She embarked for the Middle East on 21st August at Sydney aboard the RMS Morea. [5] In Egypt she joined the 1st Australian General Hospital. [3]
She returned to Australia 24th August 1918, another of her brothers having been killed in action in France in 1916. [4] Following the war she was awarded the 1914-1915 Star, British War Medal and Victory Medal. Her name appears on the Cenotaph at Neutral Bay. [6]
Margaret married William Schoenfeld, ten years her senior, before 1932. The couple had one daughter, Helen J, born about 1932. In 1940 Margaret, William and Helen were living at 5111 East 73rd Street, Seattle, Washington, in the United States. [7] Her parents both passed away in Sydney's northern suburbs, father in 1935 and mother in 1942.
Having survived all of her siblings, by eighteen years, and aged about 88 years, Margaret passed away in 1978. [8]
