Biography

Mary (Medland) Mark migrated from Cornwall to Canada West.

Mary Ann Medland was born about 1803 in Lanlivery, Cornwall, to Richard Medland and Elizabeth. Baptized May 8, 1803.

Mary Ann married John Mark in June 1820. They settled at Luxulyan and started their family there. Their fifth child Richard was born at Blisland (1836), north of Luxulyan, indicating a residence move. The 1841 census has the family at St Breward.

The family emigrated to Canada sometime after the June 1841 Census of England, and before 1844 when their 7th child Mary Ann was born in Canada; 1844 is also the year John's father died (Feb). The family settled in Reach township, Upper Canada, and established a farm there. John's brother Nicholas had settled in that place a decade prior. Two more children were born in Canada, in 1844 and 1845.

Their eldest daughter Elizabeth died in 1846, age 25.

Mary Ann died in 1849, age ~46, and is buried at Bethel Cemetery at Seagrave, Reach Township, Ontario County (now Durham) with her husband John (d. 1857) and daughter Elizabeth (d. 1846).

son John (1828) stayed in Cornwall and later traveled with uncle Henry Mark and his family when they came to Canada in 1848. John later married his 1st cousin Rachel Mark Woolcock (Henry's daughter) and they settled at Reach near his parents and uncle Nicholas.
