Elisabeth Alexandrine Mathilde Auguste was born on 10 August 1869 at Ludwigslust in Mecklenburg-Schwerin. She was the eighth child of Friedrich Franz II, Grand Duke (Grossherzog) of Mecklenburg-Schwerin, but the eldest child and only daughter of his third wife, Marie, Princess of Schwarzburg-Rudolstadt.
