Flag of Italy
Basilio Mecchia migrated from Italy to United States.
Flag of United States

Basilio was born in Rigolato, Italy, in March of either 1897 or 1898.[1] He emigrated to the United States, arriving on 31 December 1920.[1] He lived first in New York City but by 1935 had settled in Baltimore, Maryland, where he lived the rest of his life.[2] A bricklayer and stone mason, Basilio built the family home in Baltimore, where five generations ultimately lived. Basilio declared his intention to become a citizen in 1925, submitted his petition in 1928, and became a citizen on 10 November 1930.[3][4] Basilio married Pierina Vachino in New York City on 26 September 1926.[5] The couple had three children: Iole, who died as a young child, Sylvia, and Vilma.[6][2] Basilio died in Baltimore on 3 September 1951.[7] He is buried in Most Holy Redeemer Cemetery.[8]

Research Notes

  • "Gasilio" on Ellis Island arrival list. "Macchia" in 1940 Census.
  • Immigration documents give birth date 12 March 1897. WWII draft registration has 28 March 1898. Basilio provided the information for and signed both documents. Absent birth or christening records from Italy this puzzle seems irresolvable.Heritage-577 01:43, 18 January 2020 (UTC)
  • Records from the 1920s and 1930s seem to indicate considerable movement back and forth between New York and Baltimore. Basilio landed in New York at New Year's 1921; 1925 immigration documents are from Maryland; 1926 marriage was in New York; in 1927 Iole was born in Baltimore; 1930 Census and petition for citizenship have Basilio and Pierina in New York, where Iole had recently died; Sylvia was born in New York in 1932; 1940 Census has them in Baltimore in 1935.Heritage-577 01:43, 18 January 2020 (UTC)
