Biography

Dr. David John or John David Means was born in Newberry, South Carolina, United States.

He married Charlotte Agnes (Johnston) Means (1804-aft.1880) and they had the following known children:

  1. Rebecca M. (Means) Graham (1830- aft 1880)
  2. Hudson Johnston Means (1831-1872) (1831-1872)[1][2]
  3. Proctor Means (1833-)
  4. Eliz Gould Means (1836-1936)[1]

He built the Boligee Plantation in Boligee, Greene, Alabama in 1835.[3][4]

He was enumerated with his wife and two children on the 1850 U.S. Census in Greene, Alabama[1] He was enumerated on the 1860 U.S. Census in Tallahatchie, Mississippi.[2]

He passed away before 1869 when his home was purchased by the Hays family and renamed Myrtle Hill.[3]

Slaves

He owned 110 slaves according to the 1850 Greene County census.

Research Notes

David Means is named as a minor child of John and Mary Means in the 1805 will of John Means.[5]

The children of David J Means (dec'd) were named in the 1876 will of David's sister, Martha (Means) Nott.[6]
