Biography

James Harrison McVicker was born in Newark, Ohio on June 3, 1852 to John and Leannah (Hupp) McVicker. He was the second of ten and the first son born to the couple.

James was raised in Licking County, Ohio. Between 1863 and 1865, the family moved to a farm located in Montmorency Township, Illinois. He worked the farm alongside his father.[1]

By 1874, James was living in Cass County (likely Sherman), Missouri. On February 5, 1874 he married Mary (Beckett) McVicker.[2] She died in childbirth on Christmas Eve that same year. The young widower moved into his family's home in Sherman, Missouri where he worked the farm with his father.[3]

Sometime between 1880 and 1884, James married Samantha (Wink) McVicker.[4] They had seven children. The family initially lived in Dayton, Missouri [4]but by 1900, the family resided on a farm in Sherman, Missouri[5].

In 1910, the family was living on a farm in Beatrice, Nebraska.[6] James' second wife, Samantha, passed away in April 1917. On April 12, 1923 he married Mary King in Beatrice, Nebraska.[7] Their marriage did not last long. By January 1925, she had married again.

In 1930, James was living in the North LaSalle Road home of his daughter and son-in-law in Beatrice, Nebraska. Even at 78 years old, he was still working as farm labor.[8] (He had finally retired when he was in his 80s[9].)

James passed away in Beatrice, Nebraska on April 23, 1944. He was 91 years old. He is buried with his second wife Samantha and alongside his wife wife Mary in Grant Cemetery in Creighton, Missouri.[10]
