William was born in 1925. He was the son of William McRaven and Annie Terrell.^[1]

William Henry McRaven's parents owned a home in Maury, Tennessee, when he was a young child. His father was a farmer and his mother kept house.^[2] At age 14, William lived with his parents in a rented home costing 40 dollars a month in Nashville, Davidson, Tennessee.^[3]
