Biography
Sister Irene McPhail was born in 1893 at Echuca, Victoria (Australia). She was the third and youngest daughter of James McPhail and Alice Upton. [1] The family moved to Elmore, Victoria before Irene was five years of age. [2]
Sister Irene McPhail died of tuberculosis after returning to Australia during The Great War.
On 19th January 1917, Irene enlisted in the Australian Army Nursing Service as a Staff Nurse. She returned home 6th September 1919. [3] Irene embarked aboard SS Canberra at Sydney, New South Wales on 16th November 1917. [4]
She passed away of tuberculosis on 4th August 1920 and is buried in Brighton General Cemetery, Caulfield South, Victoria. Irene McPhail's name is located at panel 188 in the Commemorative Area at the Australian War Memorial, Canberra. [5]
